COMPOSER FOR FILM, TV & GAMES
Voyage LA 1
Check Out Antonio Teoli’s Story - Part 1
Today we’d like to introduce you to Antonio Teoli.
Hi Antonio, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a music composer specializing primarily in works for video games and animations. Additionally, I am the creator of Game Audio School and Sound of The Earth.
I was born in São Paulo, Brazil. I began my musical journey at the age of seven by learning to play the piano, inspired by my dad who was a guitar player. At 12, I joined a local orchestra in São Paulo, playing the tuba, and at 15, I started learning how to play the guitar.
My lifelong dream was to create music for video games. My first video game project was created with some friends using a software called RPG Maker, where I was in charge of the music. The project was going well until our computer was struck by lightning, frying our hard drive. Unfortunately, there were no backup plans or Dropbox back in those days, so that marked the end of that project.
At the age of 17, I embarked on my undergraduate studies in game design. It was a bachelor’s course, and my aim was to learn the entire process involved in game production so that I could effectively communicate with teams using the same ‘language.’ Six months later, I was hired as the game composer for the largest game company in Brazil at the time, Devworks Game Technology.
And that’s how my journey started…
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Deciding to become a professional working in the artistic field is not an easy path. You have to learn not only how to become a good professional, but also how to find pleasure in stepping out of your creative cave – hence your studio – for networking and how to deal with critics. Every time you send a music piece to a client, you feel exposed and vulnerable, so sometimes, if criticism comes, it can hit you hard. Also, learning how to deal with the ups and downs in terms of work is vital for maintaining your sanity and mental health. This is something I learned a little late in the game, luckily in time before I went crazy
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am known as a video game composer. It’s the core title connected to my name, which makes sense. After scoring almost 500 games, the connection is inevitable.
It’s always hard to choose my favorite projects, but the ones I hold closer to my heart include Nintendo’s ‘Good Job!’, Sonic Symphony’s 30th Anniversary, Netflix’s ‘Nailed It!’, ‘Dolmen’, ‘Stormbound’, the Walking Dead campaign for the game ‘The Sandbox’, and some anime series for which I composed additional music pieces alongside the Japanese composer Yoshihiro Ike.
Beyond game audio production, I am also very proud of the Amazonian sound library I created three years ago. The project is called ‘The Amazonic AMA I’, and it’s a valuable tool with over 100 instruments ready to be played in the form of an audio plugin by composers and producers. A portion of the profits goes back to natives and musicians who were part of the project, as well as for social causes in the Amazon state.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a complete nerd. My entire life revolved around studying, playing video games, and learning music. Occasionally, I’d venture out to play some soccer (remember, I’m Brazilian, lol), but most of my time was spent indoors at my parents’ house, indulging in nerdy pursuits.
